The University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and the Assistive Technology lab at Community Vision presents a three-part webinar series.
This webinar series will provide continuing education for professionals and caregivers to strengthen their skill set in utilizing augmentative and alternative communication methods. Webinar attendees will learn new techniques for supporting communication skills for individuals with complex communication needs.
Session 1: March 12th
When children or adults with complex communication needs (CCN) are not able to use their fingers for direct access to AAC systems, we need to consider alternative access modes. This session is an overview of alternative access for AAC. It will lay the foundation for the innovative 3-part approach for emerging communicators presented in Sessions 2 and 3.
Register for sessions 2 and 3 here
Session 2: April 9th
Children with complex motor or sensory needs, who would benefit from AAC, have many challenges. Knowing where to begin and how to progress can be daunting. A three-step approach to building tools, which teases apart Participation, Access, and Language (PAL) will be discussed. We will discuss the rationale for the PAL approach and demonstrate the process through case studies, exploring how each of the three areas of PAL were addressed with each child. Examples will be provided of how the three areas, when given time to develop, can come together in a comprehensive, multi-modal AAC system.
Session 3: May 14th
Building upon the 3-part approach outlined in Session 1, we will look at specific tools and strategies in each of the PAL areas. A handout for organizing tools will be discussed in the context of a brief case study.
Karen Houston from FACT Oregon will be in the lab during open hours to answer questions related to education and AT.

A study by Costigan & Light (2010) suggested a lack of preservice training in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Further, while some clinicians may have had coursework in AAC, fewer have direct experience in using evidenced-based therapy approaches when working with emergent and beginning communicators who use AAC. The purpose of this presentation is to prepare interdisciplinary interventionists (Educators, PTs, OTs, SLPs, Paraprofessionals, etc.) to provide high-quality intervention techniques to support AAC users that can be implemented across disciplines (under the guidance of a treating speech-language pathologist). The presenters will discuss evidenced-based practice techniques, demonstrate intervention approaches, and coach attendees who will practice these techniques during the presentation.

From website: “AAC in the Cloud isn’t the first AAC conference. There have been great in-person, applied AAC conferences focused on practitioners or families that have helped many people sharpen their AAC skills and get started. However, those in-person conferences can only reach so many people, and only those who can afford to travel and attend. We’re not alone in wanting to help spread the knowledge of best practices in AAC so families, teaching staff, practitioners and AAC users themselves can learn and improve.
With the power and freedom of the Internet, we can now open up an online AAC conference at very little cost that can be shared with as many participants as we can find. And best of all, YouTube just loves hosting videos for free, so we can keep all the past sessions up and open for all of us to keep learning year after year.
We hope AAC in the Cloud can make a huge difference. There are so many people who can benefit from learning about new practices and perspectives, and who may need helping getting started on their AAC journey. We’re so proud of all the presenters and moderators who done their time and energy to this free resource to the AAC community!”
