A study by Costigan & Light (2010) suggested a lack of preservice training in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Further, while some clinicians may have had coursework in AAC, fewer have direct experience in using evidenced-based therapy approaches when working with emergent and beginning communicators who use AAC. The purpose of this presentation is to prepare interdisciplinary interventionists (Educators, PTs, OTs, SLPs, Paraprofessionals, etc.) to provide high-quality intervention techniques to support AAC users that can be implemented across disciplines (under the guidance of a treating speech-language pathologist). The presenters will discuss evidenced-based practice techniques, demonstrate intervention approaches, and coach attendees who will practice these techniques during the presentation.
