If you are interested in a general introduction to assistive technology (AT), please consider visiting the AT Lab during our Open Lab hours.

If you would like a more in-depth AT assessment, our Lab has a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and an occupational therapist (OT), who is also a certified assistive technology professional (ATP).

What is an AT assessment?

Assistive technology assessments are comprehensive and collaborative sessions to help people find technology solutions.

These assessments can sometimes be brief for simple challenges. For example, a person needs a way to hold paper stable on a desk. A possible AT solution for this could be a slant clipboard.

For more complex needs, assessments can range over days, weeks, to months. This amount of time may be needed to discover the best solutions. Part of the process is exploration and skill development, especially for technology or strategies that might be new to you.

Our Model

Our consultation model focuses not only on people who use AT but also their support communities. This community may include family, therapists, teachers, job-coaches, caregivers, support staff, and so forth. Success with AT relies on finding the best solution possible but also on robust support for implementation of AT in the community. An “Inclusive Consultation Model” helps to lay this foundation for success.

Consultations are limited to approximately six total hours during a six-month period due to the size of our staff and need in our area. Depending on your desires, we may just get you started on your AT journey and then refer you to a community partner or coordinate with someone in the community who already works with you.

Collaboration is important to appropriate and successful use of AT.

How do I schedule and what is the cost?

If you are interested in an AT consultation, please contact us for intake information and funding options.

Private pay direct consultations are charged at a subsidized hourly rate of $75/hour. Indirect fees are between $40-50/hour. Travel time and mileage are charged for off-site consultations.

These below-market rates are made possible by grant funding. A brief note will be provided with description of trials, recommendations, and suggested next steps.

At this time, the AT Lab does not bill medical insurance. However, we are able to provide a receipt and documentation for you to submit to your insurance company yourself.

Consultations may be covered through local charitable funding options, and we are able to assist with that process. In addition, income-based scholarships are now available. Please inquire to learn more.
